A toothache doesn’t always mean the end of a tooth.

Root canal treatment is designed to save teeth that would otherwise be lost, helping you keep your natural smile healthy for years to come.

Frequently asked questions

Will I feel any pain during treatment?

Not at all. We use modern anaesthetics to ensure the tooth is fully numb before we start. Most patients say it feels no different from having a regular filling, just a little longer in the chair. You may notice vibrations or sounds from the instruments, but you won’t feel pain.

What about afterwards?

It’s normal to feel a bit of tenderness for a few days as the tooth settles, especially when chewing. This usually eases quickly and can be managed with simple pain relief like ibuprofen or paracetamol. Most people return to eating normally within a short time.

Why not just remove the tooth?

Whenever possible, keeping your natural tooth is always the best option. It’s stronger for biting and chewing, maintains the alignment of your other teeth, and avoids the need for more complex replacements like bridges or implants.

How long will it last?

With good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, teeth that have had root canal treatment can last for many years, often for the rest of your life.

Do I need a crown after root canal treatment?

In many cases, yes. A crown gives the treated tooth extra strength and protection, especially for back teeth that take more pressure when you chew. We’ll discuss this with you as part of your treatment plan.
