That’s where inlays and onlays come in. They are a strong, custom-made solution that restores your tooth’s shape, strength, and appearance.
Think of them as the middle ground between a filling and a crown. If a tooth is too damaged for a standard filling but doesn’t need a full cap, an inlay or onlay is a great choice. They’re designed just for your tooth, fitting snugly and blending in naturally with your smile.
A filling is shaped directly inside your tooth during one appointment. An inlay or onlay is crafted outside your mouth in a dental lab and then bonded into place. Because they’re custom-made, they’re stronger, longer-lasting, and a great choice when you need extra durability.

We usually suggest an inlay or onlay if you have a large cavity, a weakened tooth, or an old filling that’s breaking down. They’re ideal for situations where the tooth still has enough healthy structure to avoid a crown but needs more protection than a simple filling.
It normally takes two visits. First, we carefully prepare the tooth and take a digital scan or impression. You’ll leave with a temporary cover so your tooth stays protected.
At the second visit, we fit your custom inlay or onlay securely in place. Once bonded, it feels completely natural – as if it’s always been part of your tooth.
With good oral care and regular check-ups, inlays and onlays can last for many years, often much longer than a standard filling. They’re a solid, long-term investment in your dental health.
Not at all. Modern inlays and onlays are usually made from ceramic or resin that matches the shade of your natural teeth. Once fitted, most people won’t be able to spot the difference. For patients who prefer a traditional option, gold remains available and is incredibly durable.
The procedure is no more uncomfortable than having a filling. We’ll make sure your tooth is fully numb, and you may just feel a bit of vibration or pressure. Most patients are pleasantly surprised at how straightforward it is.
