Your oral health is about more than just teeth.

A quick mouth cancer screening can give you peace of mind and, if needed, help spot changes early when treatment is most effective.

What exactly is a mouth cancer screening?

It’s a simple examination where we carefully look at your mouth, lips, tongue, gums, and cheeks for anything unusual. This might be a sore that isn’t healing, a change in colour, or a small lump.

Most of the time, everything looks completely normal, but taking a few minutes to check could make a big difference.

Why is it so important?

Mouth cancer isn’t always easy to notice on your own, and it doesn’t usually cause pain in the early stages. By checking regularly, we can pick up on subtle changes long before they become serious. Early detection often means simpler treatment and better outcomes.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take?

Just a few minutes. We include a screening as part of your routine dental check-up, so it doesn’t require a separate visit or any extra time out of your day.

How does it feel?

There’s nothing to worry about; no needles, no special equipment, no discomfort. We simply use our eyes and sometimes a gentle touch to make sure everything looks healthy.

Who should have a mouth cancer screening?

Everyone. While the risks are higher for people who smoke, drink alcohol frequently, or have a family history of oral cancer, screenings are important for all adults. Even if you don’t have any risk factors, regular checks are a sensible step in protecting your health.

What signs should I look out for at home?

It’s always good to keep an eye on your mouth between visits. Look out for:

Ulcers that don’t heal within three weeks

  • Red or white patches that don’t go away.
  • Lumps or swelling inside the mouth or neck.
  • Persistent pain, numbness, or difficulty swallowing.

If you notice any of these, let us know straight away.
